#EFFTHESTIGMA

ENDING, FIGHTING, FORGETTING THE STIGMA AGAINST MENTAL ILLNESS

What does #EFFTHESTIGMA mean?

#EFFTHESTIGMA is more than just a hashtag - it is a movement and a fight against the stigma that has always clouded Mental Illness.

It is the building of a community, where people can come together to share their own experiences, common challenges, and in doing so not only spread awareness about Mental Illness, but break down the barriers that exist in front of us all.

No matter where you are from in the world, society still has much ground to gain until people can truly feel comfortable talking about their battles openly. This is about building the acknowledgement, understanding, and respect towards people with any mental illness.

Why am I a Mental Health Advocate?

Having personally struggled with anxiety and depression myself, as well as having some of my closest loved ones fight similar challenges, I have experienced and witnessed the misperception, pain, and embarrassment that comes with mental illness.

When someone is bed ridden with the flu, people give them soup and medicine; when someone is fighting cancer, loved ones come to their aid and do what they can to support their fight against a life threatening disease.

The mostly invisible nature of both depression and anxiety makes it difficult for others to understand or even acknowledge the pain someone may be going through, but it also means those with a mental illness often battle in silence.

With 1 in 5 struggling with a mental illness, the statistics support the fact that this is now an epidemic we must acknowledge and fight together.

How are WE going to do this?

Firstly, if you want to join the #EFFTHESTIGMA movement and want to be a part of a good cause, then you should be very proud of yourself. You can start by using the hashtag on your social media - this is perfect for a post that includes a positive message, a telling of your story, or even speaking about how Mental Illness has affected you or someone you love or know.

Make sure to tag @krisyeo and @effthestigma in your posts so I can get in touch with you and we can grow this community together.

You can also purchase affordable #EFFTHESTIGMA merchandise from the online

Hoodies, tees, tanks, mugs, phone cases and journals are available – they make great gifts for someone who is struggling.

All the proceeds from the shop will be donated to a Mental Health Organization.
